Be Thankful For Good Oral Health

By | November 8, 2016

It’s the time of year to be thankful, so let’s take the time to be thankful for our oral health! It’s not something you realize you should be thankful for until you’ve lost it. So let us remember, this Thanksgiving, to keep brushing your teeth twice daily, and flossing once. Remember to drink plenty of water to hydrate yourself—which not only helps in digestion, but also in the production of saliva, which helps keep the mouth clean—remember to limit your snacking, and to limit the amount of sugary foods you eat. If you abide by a few simple rules, you’ll have plenty to be thankful for. But, it’s not all doom and gloom, and, in fact, some foods, which most all of us routinely consume at Thanksgiving, are actually good for teeth.

The sugars found in our foods break down teeth, but they are also the building blocks of our teeth, because, like the rest of our bodies, our teeth require vitamins and minerals to keep strong and healthy. Because of the usual diverse spread of food at Thanksgiving, it’s easy to find foods that have the beneficial nutrients and vitamins. Turkey, for instance, is high in phosphorus, and phosphorus is a compound which aids in tooth development (this means that phosphorus helps to rebuild our teeth’s hard surfaces, which protects against harmful bacteria). The downside to turkey, however, is that it is a stringy meat, which can easily lodge itself between the teeth and gums, so, after a meal, it would be wise to clean by flossing. Also, many of the foods specific to Thanksgiving are naturally occurring foods like green beans and sweet potatoes. Both of these vegetables are hardy and loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. They are also great sources of Vitamin C, which can keep our gums strong, and, it is also thought that Vitamin C helps to protect our mouths from certain oral cancers.
